Letter 39    From The Capitol Hotel in Macon, Georgia

Capitol Hotel, Apt. 311
Macon, Georgia

15 Nov. 1943

Dear Mom, Dad and All:-

Here we are deep in the heart of the south in the middle of Georgia.  Quite a place.  The sun is shining beautifully and the temperature is about sixty-five degrees.  We are staying at the above address in Macon as there is no place at the air field for married couples.  It's only one room, but as I don't know just how long we'll be here I guess it will do okay.  It's $10.50 a week and located only about a block from the center of Macon, population 58,000.
I am assigned to the 1st Radar and VHF Installation and Maintenance Unit (Aviation) and am now in the Air Force as I thought I would be.  I'm wearing signal flags, too, instead of the good old rifles.  Rumor has it that we will be transferred in grade to the air force in which case I will change the flags for air corps wings.  After a brief period here during which I will take a course in air corps administration, etc., and a course to get aquainted with one (of the) airborne sets, I will go, in all probability to Bell Telephone Labs in New York City for a 4 to 6 week course in all airborne equipment.  After that I will have a team of ten to 12 technicians and will be on call to fly to various parts of the world to install new equipment in planes, instruct the crews in their operation and maintenance, and then fly back here for the next assignment.  These trips will usually take from thirty to sixty days.  One fellow has been, in the last year, to England, Africa, Hawaii and Guadalcanal.  So it looks like an interesting job if I can make good on the training courses.
It means the I'll have to send Eve home to you again after the Lab course, though, since I'll never know when I have to take off.  It's probably best after all, though, for her to be home with you where she can have it a bit easy during the last few months before the big event.  Irene will have to make that a baby shower instead of a household one, I guess.
By the way you can forward Eve's mail to us here at the Hotel so she'll have what came in the last week or so, if any.   She's rather anixous to get it.  We sent her mother a cable to tell her of the expected heir.
Tell Dad to deposit our last two allotment checks in our checking account as we may need to draw against it.  Our leave and travels rather ruined the Nov. 1st salary check.
Just took in "Sweet Rosie O'Grady" and it was pretty qood.  Got some Coke on the way home and had a great time opening it with no bottle opener.  However the lock on the foot locker worked nicely.  Eve is just sewing an air corps emblem on my coat sleeve, replacing the blue star I wore before.
I guess I'll have to hit the hay now at ten o'clock as I have to get up at six to get out to Robins Field at eight.
The weather is very not here tonight.  We have the windows wide open and its about 80 in our room.  There's no heater either.  Quite different than your zero or below weather.
Cheerio, then, and love to all of you from both of us.

Bob & Eve
